Improving Search Engine Rankings Improving Search Engine Rankings

While it used to be possible not too long ago to professionally design a website and see it climbing the search engine rankings, the easy days are gone. Let's keep this real: as the number of domains increases every day, there are only 10 top positions. It does not take a mathematician to understand that the odds of being listed high are becoming increasingly difficult.

Improving rankings through search engine optimization is both an art and a technical skill. Both are needed to be successful with the increasingly sophisticated search engine algorithms.

Increase the Odds with Search Engine Optimization

It is easier to compete and get top 10 rankings for keywords that do not have a high number of results returned by the search engines. For highly competitive words the task is harder and it generally takes longer. For these highly competitive terms a comprehensive strategy is essential. Writing Content

We can not emphasize enough how important this step is. No matter what you sell your site needs to be informative and well written. The keywords must be strategically distributed throughout the text and information presented in an effective, easy to read manner. The more pages with unique content, at least 250 words, the better. Copy not only has to be easy and interesting to read, but it needs to be well liked by the robots that index the site.

Good Design and SEO

Do yourself a favor if being found in the search engine results is important to you. Do not use frames; be very sparse with Flash; and do not embed text into images as search engines can't read images. If you have dynamic content, try to keep query strings at a minimum. Today, some database-driven services provide static pages as well. For a more in-depth look at this issue, view our SEO company Blog to read an article written on the subject. Another option is to read an informative piece by John Metzler entitled "How Web Design Can Affect Search Engine Rankings."

Good Linking and Search Engine Optimization

Without good quality relevant links to your site it is almost impossible to rank well. A good linking methodology utilizes relevant anchor text to the target site. Methods for increasing the number of incoming links to a site include, but are not limited to, reciprocal linking, press releases, article writing and submission, text ad placement, and directory submission. A proper link campaign should focus on more than just one of these methodologies.
